Fire hydrant replacement program begins in Taylor

When the budget was set for fiscal year 2016-17, replacing old fire hydrants was among the improvement projects.

That program started March 20 and is expected to last through the end of the month.

Taylor’s planning efforts to maintain and improve city infrastructure include replacing old and damaged fire hydrants

The work will primarily involve the removal and replacement of the fire hydrants, and in some cases the supply pipe and valve.

The City of Taylor has contracted with Bidigare Contractors, Inc. to perform the Water Main Rehabilitation Program, replacing hydrants is part of that project. Wade Trim Associates, Inc., the Consulting Engineer for the project, will be providing construction inspection oversight and construction engineering assistance.

There will be barricaded, open, construction pits at the fire hydrant replacement locations as well as construction equipment moving up and down the streets during the project.

Residents may be without water service for a period of time between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. while the contractor replaces the fire hydrant. Notification of necessary water shut-offs will be distributed the day before to the affected properties.

The shutting off/turning on process may cause some reversal of flow in existing mains which will cause circulation of sediment in the existing mains. This may cause a discoloration that is not harmful.

If discoloration occurs, the problem may be corrected by letting your cold water run for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, or until the discoloration goes away. Also, remove and clean any filters you may have at faucets or connections to appliances as they will trap sediment and result in low flow or pressure until cleaned.
